MX 900 Review Can’t decide between forged irons and a “combo set” with hybrids replacing the long irons? Looking at Mizuno’s innovative MX-900 irons might help – they’ll give you the best of both worlds. They were expensive back in 2006 when they first came out (the MSRP was over £1,050), but now they’re much more affordable. The scoring clubs in the set (8-PW) are forged irons, but the long and mid-irons (3-7) are forged hybrid irons. Known mostly for its forged blades, Mizuno hasn’t made many combo sets over the years. That’s why Mizuno MX-900 irons represent such a significant design development – especially since the hybrids are forged. Many golfers think they came out ahead of their time: the overall “flow” design of Mizuno MX-900 irons resembles that of the MP-H4 irons that came out much later, in 2012. Both models have easy-to-hit, forgiving hollow-forged hybrid irons instead of traditional long irons, but Mizuno MX-900 irons are 7 years earlier than the MP-H4 model. In fact, Mizuno MX-900 irons include the first-ever Grain Flow Forged™ hybrid irons. The set consists of two-piece, hollow hybrid 3-7 irons made of Grain Flow Forged™ 4135 high-strength steel and one-piece scoring clubs made of Grain Flow Forged™ 1035 select mild carbon steel for better control and a soft but solid feel. Mizuno’s patented Grain Flow Forging™ process is largely responsible for the famous feel its forged clubs always have, and Mizuno MX-900 irons have it too. These clubs are game-improvement irons designed for mid- to high-handicappers. A tungsten weight in the hybrid irons shifts the centre of gravity deep and low to make them easier to hit and produce a high ball flight, but it also maximizes energy transfer at impact to make your shots longer. The scoring irons are versatile and accurate in addition to being forgiving, with U-grooves that produce the spin that helps approach shots land and stop on the greens instead of running off the back. Extra-wide soles make them easier to hit from various lies and help prevent digging. Finally, three different face thicknesses are used in Mizuno MX-900 irons in order to promote consistency in distance and feel.
