Single Length Forged Irons
This was the first set I made to see if the “single length” science was true or just “junk science”. It is true, believe me, it is true. This set started as Traditional Golf forged TR-1 heads, The 8 iron of the set was the standard for weight (273 grams +-). The 3-SW were bent to 63 degrees lie and the lofts adjusted to +- 4 degrees from the next club, using the 8 iron loft as a starting point. Lofts begin at 22 for the 3 iron and go to 57 for the sand wedge. The club heads (3 – 7) were weighed and weight added to make them all identical in weight to the 8 iron. 35.2 grams were added to the 3 iron, 28.6 to the 4, etc. Clubs 3 – 8 are 36.5 inches long. The 9 is 36.25 inches, the PW is 36 inches and the P/S and SW are 35.5 inches. No weight was added or subtracted from the 8 – SW. These last four have shorter lengths because they were heavier than the 8 iron heads. All clubs are shafted with Nunchuk shafts. My opinion – they very best non steel shaft I have ever used. Clubs have various grips, JumboMax, Golf Pride, and Keltec. These clubs have been played 100 + rounds and the 7 and 8 irons have had additional extensive sessions at the driving range.
I found absolutely no loss of distance because of the shorter shafts (62 years old, 260 drive). The 4 degrees gaps are right on, from 95 yards for the sand wedge to 185 for the 3 iron. If someone tells you, “Well I hit my 8 iron 150 yards, not 135”, it’s more than likely one or all of these - their 8 iron is 37 degrees instead of 41, it is shafted an inch long, they contact the ball with the face hooded instead of perpendicular, turning their already 37 degree 8 iron into a 33, or it could be they are just a better ball striker than me (smiley face).
Anyway, that’s the story. Now to answer your question before you ask it. Why am I selling them? This was the first set, performance was the only concern, not cosmetics. I have now made the second set which is more cosmetically appealing. This time I started with Wilson FG-17’s. On the 3 – 7, I drilled 0.5 inch holes (1, 2, or 3 holes depending on the weight change needed) of calculated depth in the clubs, removing steel then replacing the steel with tungsten plugs of the needed weight. On the 9 - LW I drilled weight (3 holes) and plugged the holes with aluminum. All of the club heads are 270.1 grams and the finished clubs are 37 inches long. The performance results are the same but the cosmetics are more appealing.  Shipping is $25 to lower 48 states. Alaska, Hawaii, pay actual shipping costs. No International sales. If you were starting this project this would be your costs.
TR-1 heads $800
Nunchuk Shafts $500
Grips $100
Calculations and Fabrication ??? Lots of hours and a few “hair pullings”
So, if you ever thought about trying the single length irons route with really soft forged heads, this is the best and most inexpensive way you can go.
