Ben Hogan Apex PC 2 - 'Equaliser' Wedge (50 degrees) Blade Irons (1984)NEW GRIPS FITTED: Mid-size Grey Multi-compound Golf Pride 'MCC Plus4'SUPPLIED WITH: Brand new set of red head covers with neoprene views.Those of you who have played golf with me know that I personally play with this irons model, but this is a different set of clubs to the set which I use. I regard this model as the very best Hogan model ever produced which is why from time to time I import the best quality sets from the U.S.A., and occasionally supplement these with either a 2 iron (as here) or a 1 and 2 iron. But most players don't want a 1 iron, and they are very expensive to buy in - often costing as much as the entire other irons. In 1984 the set originally offered both a 50 degree wedge (labelled 'E' for Equaliser) and a sand wedge. However most players nowadays prefer to use three or more specially custom ground modern wedges so I rarely offer either the Equaliser or Sand Iron.The set offered for sale here comprises 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and E only. A total of NINE of the eleven possibilities. So what makes this model so special?They are not only blades, but also blades with a high head mass. (As opposed to heavy soled modern irons). Such keeps the ball down and minimises back spin. I have yet to discover any modern blades likewise designed. Even today's highest priced blades are designed more for mid-handicap players rather than low handicap players. Not only do blades potentially make it easier not to over-power one's irons (i.e. send the ball too high), and be exposed to the vicissitudes of the wind, but also make it easier to deliberately put side spin on a ball because there is no peripheral weighting doing its utmost to straighten out every shot.Finally, 1984 blades were chromed in the old way - chroming potentially capable of lasting a lifetime rather than today's 2-3 years. The old form of chroming is now illegal worldwide due to health and safety concerns with such manufacturing processes. Modern chroming is no longer a sensible way to finish irons as it never lasts. Each set of irons I offer for sale has been re-finished and customised, but I never machine polish all of the small imperfections out of the chrome as such thins and weakens it. Nor do I sharpen grooves. Such is unnecessary as I only buy in irons with full depth grooves, and all of the irons I offer have exceptional faces with the possible exception of wedges. Wedges may show signs of superficial face wear, but not groove depth prejudice.So how do I re-finish every set of irons? 1. Grooves are lubricated / soaked in thin machine oil and then thoroughly cleaned out. Even those that appear clean. 2. Heads and shafts are then fettled with white spirit as part of a thorough cleaning process aimed at restoring original shine. 3. Head paint infills are re-finished in black, with a navy blue 'Ben Hogan' logo. The blue logo is a sign that a particular set of irons has passed through my workshop.4. Paint sole infills are then double coated with lacquer in order to extend their life.5. Shafts are not normally replaced unless in very poor condition as B.H. shafts were carefully weighted to each head in order to create a special B.H. 'feel.' Such provides greater head weight (rather than club weight) consciousness which is immensely difficult to replicate with modern - largely heavier - shafts. If no more than two shafts have suffered bag abrasion such superficial damage is merely over-coated with silver enamel. Only if more than two shafts have suffered do I replace them. 6. A complete set of new grips is always fitted, and always with a modern highly popular brand irregardless of cost.7. Every club, bar grip, is smothered with light furniture wax and then polished.8. Although it is immensely difficult to distinguish between B.H. shaft stiffnesses with every set I sell I try to match shafts but it is not always possible as sometimes an 'ugly' iron is replaced with a better iron taken from another set. My buyers are usually primarily concerned with head condition and more than 80% of my customers change the shafts and fit their own favourite. But I do not offer a shaft switch service. 9. Ferrules are sometimes polished if they are in bad need, but I try to avoid this as this can wipe out the engraved club registration number. This set has one shaft which has suffered minor bag abrasion, and every club has been fitted with a grey mid size Golf Pride multi-compound MCC Plus 4 grip. The heads are only superficially marked and likely were not played for more than a year. The shafts are rust free and shiny but not perfect. With a pristine set of shafts the price would have been significantly higher. The shafts are however 100% sound and as strong as they were new. Recently a significant number of brand new vintage B.H. sets have come onto the market via either a Scottish auction or a Danish collector. This model is retailing for around £1,400. new with original grips which will have perished. So at £245. arguably this lightly restored set - with new quality grips - presents exceptional value. I hope that you agree. Please note that over the years the lofts of irons have been reduced. So for example this 2 iron may equate with the loft of one of today's 3 or 4 irons. But rest assured that this set will play very differently! Please also note that if you do change the shafts grips can be removed INTACT and then re-used. Don't let any lazy / shoddy club fitter advise you otherwise! I recommend that before changing shafts you first try out the originals as they may suit.
