A the age of 42 Karsten Solheim picked up the game of golf. He had a hard time hitting the ball, which led him to experiment with putter design. As an engineer he noticed the clubs of the day had many shortcomings and lacked basic scientific principles in their design. Before long he created a pretty interesting putter, exclaiming to his wife "I've got a name for my putter, listen to it, PING", thus in 1959 the Ping 1-A was born.    In that day the putter was a very hard sale, in his spare time Karsten pleaded with promising amateur golfers to give his putter a try, although all to often the “ridiculous” sound the putter made as it struck the ball sent the golfers laughing their way out the door. Never-the-less, the sound got people talking and when they stopped laughing they started listening, eventually understanding the superiority of his heel-and-toe weighted theory and slowly but surely Karsten’s garage based business grew.     The 1A was produced continually for years, the earliest ones contain the Redwood City address followed by Scottsdale, AZ  and lastly  Phoenix, AZ (as this one is). The putter in this auction has the Phoenix 85068 Arizona address, therefore being made sometime in the late 1960-1970. It is true piece of golf history; although it is still an amazing performer on the course. It has an overall great feel with extraordinary distance, forgiveness, and accuracy. Its clearly defined “Ping” sound when it strikes the ball is still a delight, even to this day it turns heads and sparks conversations. The sound had so much to do with the putter’s success that Karsten decided to name his entire company after it. And the rest is history.Length: 33 1/4”Putter shows typical signs if use.
