PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif — After a three-year run with TaylorMade's Tour Preferred MB irons, Dustin Johnson appears to be on the verge of a major change, after he was spotted with a set of TaylorMade PSi Tour irons in the bag during Wednesday's pro-am at the Northern Trust Open.  Following his decision to shelve RocketBladez Tour for Tour Preferred MB at the 2013 Northern Trust Open, Johnson went the other way this week, returning to a better player cavity-back iron.  Personal preference, feel and workability are just a few of the reasons muscleback players rarely play cavity-back irons. Johnson was firmly in the muscleback camp until he started testing PSi Tour on TrackMan and noticed a few improvements in spin rate and distance consistency.  "He's been testing them the last few months and liked them, but he's playing pretty good and didn't see a reason to switch," TaylorMade Tour rep Keith Sbarbaro said. "The consistency in distances was big. He liked the fact that when he mis-hit his 5-iron, it was going the same distance every time. He doesn't have to hit it perfect. That's the main reason he felt like it was a good time to switch. "He also likes the fact that they're forged now, and size-wise, it's pretty close to what he's been playing. It was a pretty easy transition."  TaylorMade's PSi Tour iron wasn't designed specifically for Johnson, but there's no question the nine-time PGA TOUR winner played a key role in the creation of the better player model. Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade's director of iron product creation, worked extensively with Johnson during the design process of PSi Tour to get feedback on why he still played a muscleback iron.  Johnson has until tomorrow to change his mind and stick with Tour Preferred MB, but all signs point to him putting TaylorMade's forged cavity-back model in play at Riviera.
