Description

1870'S MACHINE CUT GUTTY GUTTA PERCHA  GOLF BALL 1870A very scarce circa 1870's machine cut gutty golf ball. For a brief period, during the 1870's, gutta percha golf balls were marked with the use of a wooden machine with a grooved cog to score grooves on the surface of the ball. These machines were in use for only a short time before ball moulds became commonplace in the 1880's. The machines themselves are incredibly rare, with examples being sold in auction for up to $72,900, as can be evidenced by the attached photograph. This ball is an example of such a gutty. With a moulded ball, the two halves are symmetrical. With the machined marked ball the lines are scored across the circumference of the ball from differing angles, so the mesh pattern is a little more irregular. A very important ball in the evolution of the gutty. A little surcace wear, looks virtually unused, original paint remaining.LOW STARTING PRICEPlease see my other auctions and  the web site I am building: I COMBINE SHIPMENT
