High bidder wins rare 1929 first edition (presumed) BUMPSIES – THE GOLF-BALL KIDS written and illustrated by Valrie McMahan, published by The Roycrofters, East Aurora, New York. Title page reads BUMPS – THE GOLF BALL KID AND LITTLE CADDIE.Measures 11" x 8 ½" with hard red cloth boards with black print on front, decorated endpapers, and many charming illustrations of anthropomorphic golf ball characters, 89 pages.Condition: pages have separated from the boards and are bound together, as a whole, by two pieces of tape. Some pages are still strung together (photos 10 & 11). This tape creates a ghost on the fly pages, however, all other pages are clean with no ink, crayon or tears (except the front right endpaper that is dated in pen – photo 2). A few pages have light creases and/or marks in the border area. There is also a very faint water stain at the outside edge of pages, and occasionally a faint water stain at bottom edge. These stains stay at the edges and do not enter the text or illustrations (photo 5).Boards are worn, spotted/discolored and mildly warped. There are a few light pencil marks and a water stain at top right corner. Spine is torn at bottom edge. Please see photos to further assess condition.This rare book is worth the investment of repair or can just be enjoyed for its gentle story and marvelous illustrations – any of them worthy of framing.
